TLDR Hair cortisol levels change with age, starting high at birth, decreasing until age 6, then rising to adult levels by age 18.
This study established age-adjusted reference intervals for hair cortisol in 625 healthy children from birth to 18 years old, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. It found that hair cortisol levels were high after birth, decreased sharply in the first 3 months, remained lower until age 6, and then gradually increased to adult levels by age 18. The study also observed that hair growth velocity was significantly lower in infants 0–6 months compared to children 12–24 months. The findings provided the first pediatric reference ranges for hair cortisol, enhancing its potential use in pediatric clinical care.
