In the late 19th century, the Faculty of Medicine at Jagiellonian University in Krakow was home to several pioneering figures in European medicine. Alfred Obaliński developed the Gigli saw for craniotomies and initiated the use of X-rays in clinical diagnostics, contributing significantly to Polish urology. Edward Korczyński, known for the "Krakow school of stomach diseases," made notable contributions to cardiology, including the therapeutic use of nitroglycerin and the first confirmed diagnosis of coronary artery embolism. Jan Mikulicz-Radecki, a prominent figure in global surgery, advanced gastroscopy techniques, leading to the first diagnosis of esophageal cancer, with his work continuing from Vienna to Krakow.
