TLDR COVID-19 patients often experience temporary hair loss and scalp pain.
In a study published in JAAD International, Starace et al. reported on hair disorders in patients with a preexisting diagnosis of COVID-19. The authors, a group of international hair experts, found that two-thirds of these patients reported telogen effluvium, a form of temporary hair loss. They also noted that patients with both telogen effluvium and trichodynia, a condition characterized by a painful sensation in the scalp, seemed to present earlier than those with telogen effluvium alone. However, the authors cautioned that their findings were based on data from hair experts and may not be representative of the general population of COVID-19 patients. They also proposed some speculative explanations for the observed patterns of trichodynia and telogen effluvium in relation to COVID-19.
