Investigation of the Development of Hypersensitivity and Hyperalgesia After Repeated Application of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Rats: An Experimental Study

    In a 2019 study involving 32 rats, researchers found that repeated applications of both nonactivated and activated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) resulted in the development of hyperalgesia, or hypersensitivity to pain. This was indicated by smaller Von Frey g values, suggesting greater hypersensitivity, in areas treated with PRP compared to those treated with saline or no treatment. Additionally, nerve growth factor (NGF) levels were higher in PRP-treated areas, suggesting that the development of hyperalgesia may be associated with an increase in NGF and increased inflammatory mediators. The study concluded that repeated PRP treatment may lead to hyperalgesia.
