TLDR Prompt treatment of intraocular foreign bodies is crucial to prevent blindness and improve outcomes.
Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) are a serious ophthalmologic emergency that require prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent severe outcomes like blindness. They are most commonly found in the posterior segment of the eye and are prevalent in work environments, particularly among young adult males. The management of IOFBs involves a thorough evaluation of the injury, ocular examinations, and imaging techniques to guide surgical removal. Immediate removal can reduce complications, though sometimes delayed removal is necessary to manage inflammation. A study of 558 cases showed a low endophthalmitis rate of 0.9% due to standardized treatment protocols. Prognosis is influenced by initial visual acuity and complications, with early intervention being key to a favorable outcome.
