This study analyzed 97 TikTok videos from 2023 to compare the content quality of videos made by dermatologists and influencers on seborrheic dermatitis, telogen effluvium, and traction alopecia. It found that while user engagement was similar for both groups, dermatologists were more likely to recommend standard treatments (49%) compared to influencers (27%), who were more inclined to suggest alternative treatments (46% vs. 25% for dermatologists). User comments revealed confusion among viewers, often mistaking these disorders for other similar conditions. The study concludes that there is a need to clarify the standard of care for hair and scalp disorders and a lack of messaging encouraging users to seek in-person medical attention.
