TLDR Intensive immunosuppression can reduce relapse rates in multiple sclerosis patients, despite some side effects.
The study conducted on 14 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) investigated the effects of intensive immunosuppression using corticosteroids, Imuran, and antilymphocyte globulin (ALG). Patients, aged 19-58, showed varied improvement, particularly in the first few weeks of treatment, with a significant reduction in relapse rates compared to their pre-treatment experiences. Side effects included hair loss from Imuran and more severe effects from steroids, such as moon facies and weight gain. Despite these side effects, the treatment was generally well tolerated, and the results suggested that intensive immunosuppression could be a viable treatment option for MS, warranting further research.
