TLDR Equisetum debile extract, especially the ethyl acetate type, may be a promising natural ingredient for anti-hair loss products.
The study examined Equisetum debile extracts for their potential use in functional foods and nutraceuticals aimed at combating hair loss. It focused on the extracts' ability to inhibit 5α-reductase, reduce IL-6 secretion, and their antioxidant properties. Among the various extracts tested, the ethyl acetate extract (EA) was found to be the most effective, showing the highest inhibition of 5α-reductase and IL-6 secretion, as well as the highest inhibition against lipid peroxidation, without any cytotoxicity or irritation effects. The ethanolic extract (ET) had the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, except for lipid peroxidation inhibition. The study concluded that EA extract, in particular, holds promise as a natural ingredient for anti-hair loss products, but recommended further pharmacokinetic studies.
