TLDR Carthamus caeruleus root juice may reduce inflammation.
The study investigated the anti-inflammatory potential of Carthamus caeruleus L. root juice (CRJ), traditionally used in Algerian medicine. In vitro experiments showed that CRJ effectively protected human erythrocyte membranes from stress-induced damage and inhibited albumin denaturation, both linked to inflammation. The juice contained moderate levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins, with 22 compounds identified, including myricetin, luteolin, and quercetin, known for their bioactivity. CRJ provided significant protection against various stressors, such as hypotonic NaCl solutions, heat, and oxidative damage. In silico analysis supported the potential of these compounds to inhibit COX-2. The findings suggest CRJ has anti-inflammatory properties, but further in vivo studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and mechanisms.
