TLDR Mango and hibiscus leaf extracts could help manage diabetes by inhibiting enzymes related to the disease.
The study conducted in vitro tests to examine the potential inhibitory activity of extracts from Mangifera indica (MI) and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis on α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes, which are related to diabetes management. The methanolic extracts of MI and H. rosa-sinensis showed significant inhibitory activity on both enzymes. At a concentration of 100 μg/mL, the inhibitory effect was up to 89% and 90% for α-amylase, and 89% and 91% for α-glucosidase, in MI and H. rosa-sinensis respectively. These results were comparable to the standard acarbose (94% at 100 μg/mL). The study concluded that MI and H. rosa-sinensis extracts exhibit considerable α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, supporting their use in ethno medicines for diabetes management.
