TLDR Referral rates for anaphylaxis patients improved significantly after implementing guidelines.
The study conducted by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board aimed to improve referral rates of anaphylaxis patients from the Emergency Department (A&E) to the Specialised Adult Allergy Service (SAAS). An initial audit in 2007 found that none of the 77 anaphylaxis patients were referred to SAAS. Following the implementation of NICE guidelines and a streamlined referral pathway in 2013, a re-audit in 2016 showed that 18 out of 41 anaphylaxis patients (44%) were referred to SAAS. This marked a significant improvement from 0% in 2007, although further enhancements were needed. The study highlighted the importance of proper documentation, training, and resource allocation to ensure effective post-anaphylaxis management and referrals.
