TLDR Honeybees face serious threats from various diseases, but beekeepers use several methods to manage and control them.
Honeybees (Apis mellifera) face significant threats from bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases, including American Foulbrood (AFB), European Foulbrood (EFB), Chalkbrood, Nosemosis, and various viral infections like Deformed Wing Virus (DWV), Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV), and Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus (CBPV). These diseases can lead to larval death, deformities, premature death, and paralysis, often exacerbated by Varroa destructor mites. Effective management strategies include Integrated Pest Management (IPM), genetic selection for disease resistance, antibiotic treatments, and maintaining healthy hive conditions. Continued research, monitoring, and education are essential for disease prevention and the preservation of honeybee populations.
