TLDR HMPV causes respiratory infections, mainly managed with supportive care, and lacks a vaccine or specific treatment.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has gained international attention due to a significant increase in cases in China. It is an RNA virus from the Pneumoviridae family, causing seasonal respiratory infections with symptoms similar to human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), such as fever, cough, and respiratory tract infections. While it can infect all age groups, severe symptoms are more common in infants, the elderly, and those with comorbidities or immunosuppression. Diagnosis primarily relies on real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for HMPV, with supportive care like antipyretics, oxygen supplementation, and fluid therapy being the main management strategies. Research on HMPV management is ongoing.
