TLDR The main causes of hirsutism in Jordanian women are PCOS and idiopathic hirsutism.
The study investigated the causes and characteristics of hirsutism in 120 Jordanian women with an average age of 24 years. Using the modified Ferriman-Gallwey index, it was found that 50% of the participants had a score above 12, indicating significant hair growth, particularly on the face. More than half of the women experienced menstrual irregularities, and 38.3% were classified as obese. A family history of hirsutism was noted in 45.8% of the cases. The majority of hirsutism cases were attributed to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which was diagnosed in 56.8% of the women, while 37.5% had idiopathic hirsutism. Other identified causes included microadenoma and hypothyroidism. The study concluded that PCOS and idiopathic hirsutism are the predominant causes of hirsutism in this population.
