TLDR Diagnosing both systemic lupus and hemoglobinopathy is challenging due to overlapping symptoms.
The document reported a case of a 19-year-old patient with systemic lupus and a composite heterozygosis SC with a thalassemic component. The patient exhibited symptoms including anemia, polyarthralgia, macular erythematous lesions, photosensitivity, alopecia, pubic and axillary hair loss, and painful joint swelling. Hemoglobin electrophoresis revealed a compound heterozygote SC with β thalassemia, and antinuclear antibodies were positive with an anti-Sm positive antibody. The authors concluded that diagnosing both conditions can be challenging when symptoms overlap.
