TLDR The model shows how heat damages hair, helping test hair care products.
The study developed a heat-damaged hair model using a blast drying oven to simulate the effects of daily hair dryer use, providing a scientific basis for evaluating hair care products. Virgin black Asian hair was subjected to heat treatments at 40°C, 60°C, and 90°C, revealing varying degrees of damage. At 60°C for 24 hours, hair showed significant damage, including decreased fracture work, increased protein release, and severe cuticle damage. The model demonstrated changes in hair properties such as reduced water content and degraded mechanical properties, indicating more severe damage compared to virgin hair. This model can effectively assess the efficacy of hair care products designed to repair heat damage.
