Hair Trace Elements in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: Systematic Literature Review
February 2021
TLDR Exposure to toxic elements like mercury and lead may be linked to autism, and a higher zinc to copper ratio might help protect against it.
The systematic literature review aimed to explore the relationship between hair trace elements and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The review found that the pathogenesis of ASD was associated with exposure to toxic elements like mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb), which act as neurotoxicants. Additionally, the study highlighted the significance of the zinc to copper (Zn/Cu) ratio, suggesting that higher levels of zinc and lower levels of copper may have a protective role against ASD. However, due to varied methodologies and sample sizes in the studies reviewed, direct comparisons of results were not informative.
