TLDR Removing hair wrapped around the labia quickly prevents serious tissue damage.
In the case report from 2018, Hair-thread tourniquet syndrome (HTS) is described as a rare condition where hair or thread becomes tightly wrapped around an appendage, potentially leading to pain, injury, or loss of the appendage. The report presents a case involving a teenage female with hypertrophic labia who was initially thought to have an infected labial cyst but was found to have hair strangulating the labial minora. Immediate mechanical release of the strangulation improved blood flow and prevented tissue ischemia, necrosis, and potential amputation. The study emphasizes the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment, which includes removing the constricting agent and, if necessary, making an incision to relieve compartment syndrome. The report also notes that infants are particularly at risk for digital ischemia from HTS and that emergency doctors should be aware of this uncommon but potentially severe condition.
