TLDR Hair sutures are effective, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient for surgery.
This study reviews the historical and contemporary use of hair sutures, particularly horsehair, in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Hair sutures have been valued for their pliability, strength, and nonabsorbable nature, making them suitable for procedures like facial reconstruction and skin grafts. Despite the rise of synthetic materials, there is renewed interest in hair sutures due to their renewable nature and potential for environmentally friendly surgical practices. The study, which reviews 27 primary publications, suggests that hair sutures provide favorable aesthetic outcomes, minimal tissue reaction, and cost-effectiveness, highlighting their continued relevance in modern surgical procedures.
