TLDR Hair loss in women is linked to higher depression symptoms.
The study conducted on 157 female outpatients over 20 years old found that 54% reported hair loss, and 29% reported at least two key symptoms of depression. There was a significant association between complaints of hair loss and symptoms of depression, even after adjusting for other factors (p=0.02; OR=2.79; 95%CI: 1.18-6.61). Differences were also noted in age, family history of alopecia, hair length, number of hairs extracted in the hair pull test, hair thinning, seborrheic dermatitis, and personal relationship issues between those with and without hair loss. The findings suggested that hair loss complaints were common and linked to a higher prevalence of depression symptoms, highlighting the impact of hair loss on psychological well-being.
