TLDR Arsenic trioxide effectively treats APL, improving survival rates despite its toxicity.
The document reviewed the use of arsenic trioxide in treating acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL), highlighting its success in improving survival rates for both relapsing and newly diagnosed patients despite its known toxicity. The study focused on using hair analysis as a biomonitoring tool to track arsenic exposure over time, utilizing Synchrotron radiation-based X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) spectroscopy for precise measurement. The research found that arsenic content in hair correlated with clinical treatment timelines, indicating rapid elimination of arsenic. Additionally, micro-XRF cartography revealed arsenic distribution at the hair periphery, and micro-XANES spectra suggested that arsenic is incorporated in its trivalent oxidation state.
