TLDR Higher doses of glucocorticoids increase the risk of blood clots in asthma patients.
The study examined the link between glucocorticoid use and venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk in 437,842 asthma patients aged 20–59 years in the UK from 1995 to 2015. It identified 1,168 idiopathic VTE cases and matched them with 4,672 controls. Current glucocorticoid users had a twofold increased risk of VTE (aOR=1.9), with systemic users showing a higher risk (aOR=3.5) than inhaled users (aOR=1.5). The risk was highest among current users with fewer prescriptions and lower cumulative doses, indicating an acute effect. The study suggested a dose-response relationship and highlighted the need for careful risk-benefit analysis when prescribing glucocorticoids to asthma patients.
