TLDR Sodium benzoate at higher doses can harm kidney and liver functions and cause oxidative stress and DNA damage.
This study investigated the effects of sodium benzoate on oxidative stress and genotoxicity in prepubertal rats. Forty-two male rats were divided into three groups: control, Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) dose, and No Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) dose of sodium benzoate. After six weeks of oral administration, biochemical parameters, oxidative stress index (OSI), and DNA damage were assessed. The results showed that the NOAEL dose of sodium benzoate increased ALT and creatinine levels, elevated total oxidant status (TOS), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and OSI, while reducing total antioxidant status (TAS). Additionally, DNA damage was observed in the NOAEL group. The study concluded that while the ADI dose had no adverse effects, the NOAEL dose impaired kidney and liver functions and could lead to oxidative stress and genotoxicity.
