TLDR γ‐Oryzanol ointment increases sebaceous gland activity and sebum production.
The study investigated the effects of topically applied γ-Oryzanol on sebaceous glands using a double-blind method on rats. A 1% γ-Oryzanol ointment was applied, and its effects were compared to a control ointment base. The results showed that γ-Oryzanol significantly increased the labeling index and arrested mitosis values, indicating stimulated sebaceous gland cell activity. This was associated with increased sebum production, as noted in previous research. γ-Oryzanol was identified as the only substance, aside from sex hormones, known to stimulate sebaceous glands through topical application.
