TLDR Public education on iodine use is crucial for radiation protection, especially for children.
The Fukushima nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011, was a level-7 event, similar to Chernobyl, caused by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that led to a reactor explosion and radioactive release. Despite being 2000 kilometers away, Taiwan faced potential radiation exposure risks. The document emphasized the importance of understanding radiation effects, which vary with dosage, and the use of stable iodine for protection against radioactive iodine isotopes. It highlighted the need for public education on iodine prophylaxis, especially for children and adolescents, who are more sensitive to radiation. The document also advised against stable iodine for adults over 40 unless exposure is significant, due to potential side effects. In Taiwan, the focus was on minimizing stochastic effects through sheltering and food regulation rather than iodine intake, with guidance on when and how to use stable iodine if necessary.
