TLDR 31.6% of female students had hirsutism, often linked to conditions like menstrual issues and acne.
The study conducted at Babol University of Medical Sciences in 1999 aimed to determine the frequency of hirsutism among female students and its association with various conditions. Out of 607 students, 462 participated, revealing that 31.6% had hirsutism. The majority of participants were aged 20-23. The study found significant associations between hirsutism and menstrual abnormalities (38%), acne (49%), androgenic alopecia (34%), hypertrichosis (28%), and a familial history of hirsutism (28%). The findings suggested that beyond idiopathic and racial factors, attention should be given to polycystic ovary syndrome as a potential underlying cause.
