TLDR Formononetin, found in red clover, may treat hair loss with fewer side effects.
This article discusses the potential use of formononetin, a naturally occurring compound found in red clover, as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia is a common genetic condition that can cause hair loss in both men and women. Currently, the only FDA-approved treatments for this condition are topical minoxidil and oral finasteride, which can have undesirable side effects. Formononetin has been shown to have hair regrowth effects and to inhibit the testosterone 5α-reductase enzyme, which is linked to hormonal hair loss. Further studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and determine the optimal concentration, delivery, administration frequency, and potential side effects.
