TLDR Male infertility often lacks thorough investigation, potentially missing reversible causes.
The Andrology Research Consortium (ARC) was established to address the lack of a centralized database for male infertility causes and treatments. By 2016, 14 centers across North America contributed data on 2,108 patients. The study found that male infertility was often treated with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) without specialized investigation into its causes. Notably, only 9.8% of couples undergoing IUI and 28% undergoing IVF had a male factor evaluation beforehand. The study highlighted that reversible causes of male infertility might be overlooked without proper investigation. Common lifestyle factors included marijuana use (12.7%) and smoking (15.6%), while exogenous testosterone use varied between centers.
