Finasteride Reduces Total Cholesterol in LDLR-Deficient Mice

James McQueen, Ivan Pinos, Jaime Amengual
TLDR High doses of finasteride lower cholesterol and body weight in certain mice.
The study investigated the impact of finasteride (FIN) on cardiovascular disease risk using LDLR-deficient mice. Mice were fed a Western diet with varying doses of FIN for 12 weeks. Results showed that high doses of FIN significantly reduced total cholesterol levels (P < .0001) and body weight gain (P = .0027) without affecting glucose tolerance or causing hepatic toxicity. These findings suggested that high-dose FIN could reduce total plasma cholesterol and body weight in this mouse model.
