TLDR Finasteride works for male hair loss only.
A study presented at an international workshop on hair loss in Brussels found that oral finasteride, marketed as Propecia, is not effective in treating postmenopausal women with hair loss. The study involved 65 women who received finasteride and 69 who received a placebo for one year, and there was no significant difference in hair loss between the two groups. The study's lead researcher, Dr. Joanne Waldstreicher from Merck Research Laboratories, stated that Propecia should only be used in men due to its lack of efficacy and known risks in women who are or may become pregnant.
