TLDR GoodRx.com helps find the cheapest options for finasteride, a medication not often covered by insurance.
The study explored the cost of finasteride, a medication used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenic alopecia, using data from GoodRx.com. Insurance often doesn't cover prescriptions for androgenic alopecia, leading patients to pay the full price. The prices for 1mg and 5mg doses of finasteride were obtained from local and mail order pharmacies in Washington, D.C. The average cost for 30 pills of 1mg finasteride was $16.00 at local pharmacies and $12.45 for mail orders. For 90 pills, the average cost was $30.87 at local pharmacies and $16.65 for mail orders. The prices for 5mg finasteride were the same. The study concluded that GoodRx.com can help patients identify the most affordable options when purchasing medication with coverage limitations.
