TLDR Facial hair transplants are generally successful, with hair growth beginning around 3 months post-surgery.
In 2015, researchers Kapil Dua, Aman Dua, and Renu Kothottil from Punjab, India, conducted a study on facial hair transplantation, specifically focusing on beard and moustache reconstruction. They found that 7% of hair transplant surgeries were for non-scalp areas, 90% of which were facial. Reasons for these transplants varied from scars, traction alopecia, congenital hypotrichia/atrichia, post-folliculitis scarring, long-standing alopecia areata, or a desire to improve density. The procedure differed from scalp hair transplantation, with facial hair having less density but a larger caliber than scalp hair. The planning for facial hair transplants required detailed examination of the entire face to determine the number of grafts needed. The results were generally positive, with hair growth starting around 3 months and improving over the next year.
