TLDR Mimosine from Leucaena leucocephala can enhance biodiesel stability.
The study investigated methods to extract mimosine, a toxin found in Leucaena leucocephala, from its leaves and seeds, and explored its potential as a biodiesel additive due to its antioxidative properties. Two extraction methods were compared: Soxhlet extraction (SXE) and HCl digestion, with SXE proving more effective, yielding higher mimosine levels. Defatted seeds showed lower mimosine content initially, but heat treatment reduced mimosine levels further. Mimosine demonstrated promising antioxidative properties, with the highest stabilization efficacy at 10,000 ppm, suggesting its potential use in enhancing biodiesel oxidative stability.
