TLDR Zinc levels are not directly linked to pattern hair loss.
The study "Evaluation of Serum Zinc Level in Patients with Pattern Hair Loss (A Case-Controlled Study)" conducted at Mansoura University hospital involved 100 subjects, 50 with pattern hair loss and 50 controls. The mean serum zinc level was 75.36±19.29 in the hair loss group and 71.73±20.19 in the control group, with no significant difference (p= 0.360). Low zinc levels were found in 56% of cases and 60% of controls, also with no significant difference (p= 0.685). There was no significant variation in serum zinc levels across different degrees of hair loss in either male or female patients. The study concluded that zinc deficiency cannot be viewed as a direct cause in the development of androgenic alopecia and not all patients may benefit from obtaining nutritional supplements. There is disagreement on the function of supplementing with zinc.
