TLDR Carthamus oxyacantha may help treat BPH by inhibiting 5α-reductase.
The study evaluated the potential of Carthamus oxyacantha extracts for inhibiting 5α-reductase, an enzyme linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in older men. BPH is associated with dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which promotes prostate growth. In vitro tests using prostate homogenates and HPLC analysis revealed that the n-hexane fraction of the methanolic extract of Carthamus oxyacantha showed significant 5α-reductase inhibitory activity, with an IC50 value of 0.301 mg. This suggests that Carthamus oxyacantha, particularly its n-hexane fraction, could have therapeutic potential for treating BPH by effectively inhibiting 5α-reductase.
