TLDR The ethanol patch test reliably identifies ALDH phenotype.
The study conducted in 1989 involved 311 healthy Japanese participants, including 237 adults and 74 children, to evaluate the effectiveness of the ethanol patch test as a method for identifying the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) phenotype. By comparing the test results with ALDH phenotypes determined through isoelectric focusing of hair root samples, the researchers demonstrated that the ethanol patch test was a reliable indicator of ALDH phenotype. The study suggested the potential usefulness of this test in future research.
