    Herman Bierens had a distinguished 32-year career in econometrics, contributing significantly to model specification testing, semi-nonparametric estimation, and cointegration. He worked at several universities, including Penn State, where he felt valued and helped build the economics department. Bierens developed the EasyReg software and authored monographs to support econometric education. He emphasized mathematical rigor in Ph.D. programs and enjoyed collaborative research with students. Despite early academic struggles and a harrowing sailing experience, Bierens remained dedicated to his work and planned to continue his research upon retirement, even while sailing.
