TLDR Essential oils are increasingly used in cosmetics for their natural benefits but must be used carefully to avoid skin reactions.
The cosmetics industry has increasingly incorporated essential oils into their products due to their natural origin and diverse pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-aging, and regenerative effects. This work reviewed the use of essential oils in cosmetology, finding that while some oils like chamomile, rosemary, and geranium can be applied directly to the skin when diluted in carrier oils, most essential oils require careful use to avoid skin reactions. Research has shown that essential oils can have beneficial effects on the skin, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant actions, as well as on hair, including anti-dandruff, anti-sebum effects, and stimulating hair growth.
