Review of Selected Endpoints in Studies Evaluating the Effectiveness and Efficacy of Topical Finasteride Use for Androgenetic Alopecia

Logain G. Alghanemi, Ameera Balhareth, Alya M Alsiyoufi
TLDR Topical finasteride's effectiveness for hair loss needs standardized evaluation methods.
This review analyzed the current literature on the effectiveness of topical finasteride (FNS) for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), focusing on the endpoints used to measure its efficacy. The study included human research from PubMed, excluding animal studies and those lacking clinical endpoints. It found that objective tools for hair evaluation were predominantly used, but their inconsistent application across studies made statistical combination of results challenging. The review suggests that future research should employ validated and standardized methods for more reliable outcomes. Subjective measures of hair growth were notably absent in some studies, indicating a need for their inclusion in future investigations.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
