TLDR The red panda's hair loss was caused by an endocrine issue linked to ovarian tumors.
A 9-year-old red panda at the Vienna Zoo exhibited progressive hair loss over 2 years, starting from the tail and spreading to other body parts, accompanied by severe itching and mild self-mutilation at the tail. Despite antifungal and antibiotic treatments, the condition persisted. Skin biopsies indicated epidermal thinning, dermal sclerosis, pyoderma, and complete hair follicle atrophy. An ultrasound identified a 3 cm mass near the kidneys, and necropsy revealed two nodules identified as enlarged ovaries with granulosa cell tumors. The study concluded that the hair loss was due to an endocrine abnormality.
