TLDR The method successfully imaged hair follicles under the skin using iron nanoparticles.
The study demonstrated a method for imaging sub-dermal hair follicles in vivo using a solution of iron nanoparticles and an iron stain. The experiment involved 10 participants and compared in vivo images of hair follicles under the skin with ex vivo images of plucked follicles from 9 samples. The results showed that the sub-dermal images were similar in size and shape to the ex vivo images. Initially, there was a significant difference in area measurements between the two groups, but after adjusting for imaging differences, no significant area differences were found. This method provided comparable images of hair follicles under both shaved and unshaved skin.
