TLDR Standard intralesional corticosteroids are the best treatment for patchy alopecia areata.
The study compared the efficacy and safety of intralesional minoxidil 5% alone and in combination with intralesional triamcinolone acetonide versus standard intralesional corticosteroid injections in treating alopecia areata (AA). Conducted on 20 Egyptian patients with multiple AA patches, the study found that all treatment groups, except the control group, showed significant improvement in dermoscopic findings of AA. Side effects were common across all groups, with injection pain being the most notable but not statistically significant. The conclusion reinforced that standard intralesional corticosteroids remain the primary treatment for patchy alopecia involving less than 50% of the scalp and for cosmetic areas like the beard and eyebrows.
