TLDR Intralesional triamcinolone is the most effective treatment for hair regrowth in alopecia areata patients.
In the observational study conducted from June 2013 to September 2014, 100 patients with alopecia areata were treated with either excimer light therapy (40 patients), intralesional triamcinolone (46 patients), or topical 5% minoxidil (14 patients) to compare the efficacy of these treatments. The results indicated that intralesional triamcinolone was the most effective, with 76.67% of patients with a single patch and 62.5% with multiple patches experiencing more than 50% hair regrowth. Excimer light therapy resulted in more than 50% regrowth in 61.76% of patients with a single patch and 16.67% with multiple patches. Topical minoxidil was the least effective, with 33.33% of single patch patients seeing more than 50% regrowth and no multiple patch patients achieving this outcome. The study concluded that multiple patches of alopecia areata were more resistant to treatment than single patches, and the scalp was more responsive to treatment than the beard area.
