TLDR Zinc pyrithione in shampoo or rinse reduces dandruff and itching.
A clinical study from 1978 investigated the effects of zinc pyrithione on dandruff and itching. It was found that using a zinc pyrithione-containing hair rinse significantly reduced both dandruff and itching. The effectiveness of the treatment increased with the amount of zinc pyrithione that remained on the hair. Notably, a shampoo with 1% zinc pyrithione had similar effects to a hair rinse with 0.3%, which was attributed to the residual amount of the agent on the hair.
