Effect of Topical Hormones Aging Human Skin
January 1967
TLDR Testosterone slightly improved aging skin, while corticosteroids worsened it.
The study from 1967 found that the male hormone testosterone had a modest rejuvenating effect on aging human skin, improving the microscopic architecture and causing slight improvements in wrinkles, hair growth, and sweating. Progesterone and pregnenolone had similar but less pronounced effects, while ethinyl estradiol showed no effect. Corticosteroids worsened the aging changes in the skin. The research highlighted the growing importance of addressing skin aging as the population ages, suggesting that while internal health is crucial, the appearance of the skin also significantly impacts mental and physical well-being.
