TLDR Metformin improved menstrual cycles and cholesterol but didn't change weight or hormone levels in the short term for overweight PCOS women.
This cohort study involving 180 overweight/obese PCOS women, with 121 receiving metformin and 59 not, found that short-term metformin treatment did not significantly affect BMI, insulin, testosterone, or adipokine levels. However, it did lead to significant improvements in menstrual irregularities and lipid profiles, specifically increasing HDL and decreasing LDL levels in the metformin-exposed group. Additionally, a significant negative correlation between testosterone and omentin was observed in the metformin-unexposed group. Overall, while metformin improved some clinical parameters, it did not significantly alter key endocrine markers in the short term.
