TLDR Adding human hair to sand improves its strength when dry and maintains strength when wet.
The study, conducted 5 years ago, investigated the impact of waste human hair fibers on the shear behavior of sand in both dry and saturated conditions. The researchers carried out three series of tests using unsorted human hair fibers under dry and saturated conditions, and sorted fibers of varying lengths under saturated conditions. All test specimens were prepared at 80% relative density. The experiments revealed that human hair fiber reinforcement significantly affected the shear behavior of dry sand. However, under saturated conditions, the human hair fiber reinforcement was able to maintain shear strength parameters similar to unreinforced sand, even though these parameters are likely to reduce. The study concluded that using unsorted fibers as reinforcement was more beneficial than using sorted fibers of uniform length.
