TLDR Fenugreek aqueous extract is more effective against acne bacteria than the alcoholic extract.
The study investigated the effects of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Trigonella foenum-graecum L (fenugreek) and some antibiotics on bacterial species isolated from acne vulgaris infections in 50 students from Sumer University (28 females and 22 males). The study found that acne infections appeared earlier in females than males. Among the bacterial isolates, 36 were gram-positive (28 Staphylococcus epidermidis, 10 Staphylococcus aureus, and 8 Propionibacterium acnes), 3 were yeasts (Pityrosporum spp.), and 1 was gram-negative. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis showed variable sensitivity to antibiotics, with the highest sensitivity to cephalosporins. The aqueous extract of fenugreek was more effective in inhibiting bacterial growth than the alcoholic extract.
