TLDR Propolis from Tetragonula biroi bees may help fight cancer cells.
The study investigated the effects of ethanolic propolis extract from Tetragonula biroi bees on human cancer cell lines HeLa and MCF-7. Using the MTT Assay method, the researchers found that rough propolis exhibited higher cytotoxic effects, inhibiting MCF-7 cell growth by 92.42% and HeLa cell growth by 86.81%, compared to smooth propolis, which inhibited MCF-7 by 87.60% and HeLa by 77.27%. The propolis extracts were analyzed for anticancer components and flavonoid and polyphenol content. The study concluded that propolis has potential as an anticancer agent, but further research is necessary.
