TLDR Skin changes can help identify eating disorders early.
Eating disorders (EDs) such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) were psychiatric conditions with significant medical implications, including dermatological signs that could aid in early diagnosis. These disorders were more prevalent in Western cultures but were increasing in non-Western countries. Dermatologists played a crucial role in identifying EDs through skin signs, which were sometimes the only visible symptoms. Early detection and a multidisciplinary approach were essential for better prognosis. Common skin signs included lanugolike body hair and asteatosis, which were linked to the effects of starvation and other ED-related behaviors.
